The Green “Emerald – Season” offers Great Value Safaris!

The Luangwa Valley in Zambia is at its most dramatic in the Green - Emerald Season, during November through to March when the rains fall. This is the most underrated experience in the bush. However, this is the most spectacular time of the year in the Luangwa Valley and offers excellent value with lower rates!

During this time of year the bush is at its greenest - flourishing with growth, rivers and lagoons are brimming and boating safaris take you eye to eye with hippos and crocodiles.

This is the most exciting time to be in the South Luangwa Valley. Experience magnificent skyscapes and sunsets, a wealth of migratory birds, crystal clear night skies and the occasional dramatic tropical downpour, all providing the back drop for a stunning safari!

As the Luangwa River flows over into the brimming lagoons, boating into these lagoons with flooded ebony groves and flowing channels gives you a view of the Valley which is normally inaccessible during this season.

Why the Emerald Season?

  • It is excellent for photography. There is much less dust and the air is crystal clear.
  • Fantastic birding with migrant and resident birds in breeding plumage; heronries and avarian kindegardens in Feb/March.
  • Births and nursery herds of young impala and warthog drop early in November. It is also the peak time for elephants, zebra and many more to birth their young.
  • The bush is green, lush and beautiful and the skies are blue with dramatic afternoon skies adorned with spectacular clouds and alight with colour!
  • The Luangwa River is high and dramatic so be ready to encounter wonderful boating (especially for the River Journeys at Nsefu Camp).
  • There is No single supplement.
  • Fewer people are around - let this be your ‘Garden of Eden’.

The Luangwa River is one of the last remaining major rivers in Africa, and even in the world, that has not been damned for hydropower. This vast river still annually rises, floods into lagoons and channels, changes course and results in new lagoons. In so doing it creates a rich flood plain river system. To be in the heart of the park, at peak flood time, staying at the first camp built in Zambia (1951) with the river being your only access, is quite an experience!
