Rufiji River Camp

Camp, 20 Tents
Foxes African Safaris

Situated in southern Tanzania, the Selous Game reserve is the largest nature reserve in Africa and is the second largest in the World. It abounds in open space and liberty with its fifty-five thousand square kilometres.

Rufiji River Camp is located on the banks of the Rufiji River which flows through the Selous Game Reserve.

The camp enjoys the most fabulous views overlooking the wide, sprawling waterways.

The tented camp is situated in the heart of the reserve, is environmentally friendly and each tent is equipped with a private bathroom and a veranda facing the river.

There is a constant flow of animals coming down to drink at the river offering a permanent show to guests of the camp.

Accommodation and Facilities:

Twenty tents facing the sunset, with comfortable beds, walled en-suite facilities, mosquito netting and all of the comfortable amenities expected of a lodge.

Each tent has a private veranda under a roof of local straw (makuti) that creates the perfect place for reading, writing or just resting in the shade.

The dining area, bar and lounge are all shaded by a makuti roof with views of the Rufiji River offers a well stocked bar and international cuisine.

Fourteen tents on wooden platforms with thatched roofs all have en suite bathroom facilities. All the tents can be double, twin, single or triple rooms. Extra beds can be added for children. The tents are fully furnished and are mosquito proof - spray is provided.

A structure in the central part of the camp hosts the restaurant, bar and library, all with a view of the river and the sunset. All of the camp structures, kitchen included, are constantly being renovated, attaining the highest level of comfort.

Electricity and hot water are powered by solar panels. Electricity is provided by a generator - 24V with UK style 3 pin sockets. However it is not powered for 24 hours but is available for lighting and recharging batteries but not for hairdryers.

As a guest at Rufiji River Camp, boating safaris and walking safaris are available.

All game activities are led by the camps guides in adapted 4WD vehicles. The vehicles have tiered seating and roof shading. Game viewing is shared unless a private vehicle is reserved. Walking safaris are conducted with guides and armed rangers.

The Selous Game Reserve is home to 800,000 mammals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, zebras, impalas, gnus, hartebeests, waterbucks, giraffes, kudus, warthogs, grysbok, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, bush babies, baboons, Vervet monkeys and mongooses.

Boating safaris add a new point of interest to any trip, viewing birds nesting in the banks and seeing crocodiles and hippos up close, which are the reserve’s specialty.

Bird-viewing is a delight, with at least 440 bird species documented as residents of the reserve. The sight of the innumerable birds that enliven the park is breathtaking: yellow-billed storks, marabou storks, spoonbill stocks, Goliath herons, ibises, gray herons, egrets and pelicans as well as weaves, starlings, geese, ducks and numerous birds of prey; eagles, falcons, kites, etc.
