Chongwe River Camp & House
Chongwe River Camp is situated at the joining of the Zambezi and Chongwe rivers, in the Lower Zambezi Valley. The Chongwe River, a quiet tributary of the Zambezi, borders the Lower Zambezi National Park offering 4000 square kilometres of pristine wilderness that teems with game.
Zambia's Lower Zambezi is renowned throughout Africa for its magnificent herds of wild elephant, exceptional predator viewing and of course the Zambezi River. It's also home to one of the continent's most spectacular and unique private homes - Chongwe River House, which sleeps eight in four spacious ensuite bedrooms, making it an ideal safari base for a family or a group of friends wanting a private safari.
Accommodation on offer is a real home from home, whether you reside in their classic tents - the Albida or Cassia tented suites, the exclusive Chongwe River House, Tsika Island, or Kasaka River Lodge – their newest member of the family.
The four bedroomed house designed by Neil Rocher, is a stunning private house with swimming pool, situated approximately 1km from Chongwe River Camp. This four bedroomed exclusive property has king-sized plus beds with en-suite facilities to each room and provides for the more specific needs for those with younger children.
From each bed there is a stunning view of the bush or the escarpment.
The bathrooms have waterfall showers and exquisite basins carved from wood and white marble by the Zambian artist Eddie Mumba. From your outside baths you can lie and gaze out across the bush.
It is a triumph of design and your time here can be tailored to satisfy the most discerning of modern travellers.
The property comes fully staffed with a guide, house manager and private chef – all of whom will tailor for your private safari.
The classic tents are light, airy and spacious, with either a king-sized or two single beds. Each of Chongwe River Camp's nine standard tents are equipped with enough luxuries to ensure your stay in the bush is exceptional. Cotton linens, local textiles and hand-crafted furniture blend seamlessly with organic fittings and fixtures.
All of the tents are under thatch, ensuring maximum coolness in the heat of the day. Each has a large outdoor bathroom with hot and cold running water, shower, toilet, vanity unit and dressing area with a wardrobe and full-length mirror.
The tents also have their own private balconies overlooking the river, making them an ideal place for relaxation and contemplation of Africa’s wonderful wilderness.
Game viewing - night drives and all day drives can be done in either the Lower Zambezi National Park, or the Chiawa Partnership Park, or even by boat on the Zambezi. Canoeing, walking, and fishing are also offered.
Being on the Zambezi River is a memorable experience… whether canoeing, bird watching along the islands by boat, or taking a fishing trip to do battle with the famous tiger fish.
Many guests are happy to spend the day relaxing on the deck.
The chances are you will see elephant wandering around the grounds or crossing the river. Impala, kudu and many other species come to the water to drink.
If you sit long enough, all of Africa will come to you. As guests of the house you will be entitled to private vehicles, guides, canoes, a boat and an armed scout for walking safaris - all at your disposal.
All activities can be tailored to your individual requirements.
